Sugary sodas and sports drinks are sold in virtually every grocery store, gas station and corner market across the country. These unhealthy beverages are widely advertised on TV, radio, in print and online. People interested in pursuing healthy lifestyles are being misled into believing that sports drinks are somehow “good” for them. At the same time, impressionable youngsters are led to believe that drinking certain brands of sodas is “hip” and the thing to do. Not surprisingly, over 60 percent of American teenagers consume at least one of these drinks each day.

What is not being advertised about these sugary drinks is the fact that they're wreaking havoc on teeth. The acid and sugar content in most sports drinks and sodas work together to strip the enamel from teeth while coating teeth in sugar to cause tooth decay. Prevention of enamel loss is vital to the long-term health of teeth. Each acid attack lasts for about 20 minutes, which means every time a sip of a sugary drink is taken, the acid damage begins all over again.

If sugary drinks are consumed, it's best to do so in moderation. It's also a good idea to use a straw so the teeth are less exposed to the sugar and acid in the drink. Additionally, taking a drink of water after drinking a sugary beverage helps rinse the mouth and dilute the sugars. However, as far as tooth health is concerned, the best thing to do is to avoid drinking sugary sodas and sports drinks altogether. Even diet or “sugar free” beverages still contain acid that harms teeth.

It's that time of the year again when kids begin to pick out their Halloween costumes and dream of collecting as much candy as they can while trick-or-treating. While our Huntsville, AL dentist and staff want all our patients to have fun this Halloween, we do want to remind everyone that eating too much candy is not good for your teeth. During this holiday season, there are all types of snack temptations that can be detrimental to your oral health.

During the Halloween season, the focus is usually on trick-or-treating and candy. However, with so many parties and other get-togethers planned at this time of the year, there is an abundance of other sweet indulgences that can cause dental problems. The good news is that there are many healthy treats to enjoy that make great alternatives to candy and other sugar-laden goodies. Our Huntsville general and cosmetic dentistry staff put together a few healthy and tasty Halloween snacks to have on hand that don't contain loads of processed sugar. Enjoy!

My life is not very complicated. As a general and cosmetic dentist in Huntsville, AL, I wake up, I create smiles, I come home spend time with my husband and go to bed. The next morning I get up and do it all over again.

Well, wait maybe it’s not so simple to most people. I think maybe it’s that create smiles part. Smiles are my life! What does it feel like to not be able to smile? I hate to even think about it. What if God created us without teeth? Let’s shift the direction of this conversation. PRAISE GOD FOR SMILES! I see people every day who have not smiled in years. Their entire disposition is gloomy. They make excuses for why they don’t smile. I am not the smiling type. What is there to smile about? It’s not cool to smile. I have heard it all! At the end of the day or should I say at the end of the process, all of those excuses are just that! EXCUSES!!

I can’t wait to share some of the stories of how creating smiles has changed many lives. If you follow me, you know how this goes by now! You have to wait on the book! If you have any questions regarding how I create smiles, or you would like to schedule an appointment, give my dental office, Healthy Smiles P.C., a call.

I am a general and cosmetic dentist in Huntsville, Alabama. We encourage our family of patients to have regular hygiene visits and exams throughout the year. This helps us to identify the problems and plan time and finances to complete the work within your insurance benefit year. Our team knows how to help you plan so that your out-of-pocket expense is minimal. Well, you say "Doc it is already November and I have not seen a dentist all year!" It is not too late!! Call a dentist in your area and schedule today!! Many offices have online scheduling so that you do not have to sit on hold or wait to talk to someone. In fact our practice offers that service! Just go to www.healthysmileshuntsville.com/office-info/appointment-request.aspx , enter all of the necessary information, click submit and voila it is done!

Remember your insurance benefits are yearly. Most of them start over in January!! IF YOU DON'T USE IT YOU LOOSE IT!! That means if you have $1,500 as a maximum benefit you are paying for it all year with premiums. If you do not use that $1500 by December 31 you lose that $1,500. You will start over January 1 with a new $1,500. So if you have $4,000 worth of work to get done you could start now and use the $1,500 benefit and do the other half in January. You would come out-of-pocket approximately $500 this year and $500 next year. If you wait to start next year you will come out-of-pocket $2,500! This is a very basic example and the theory is true for most plans!! What are you waiting for? Give us a call at 256-858-6055 or sign online www.healthysmileshuntsville.com and schedule an appointment in order to have a toothache free holiday season!!

Many of the foods and drinks we consume everyday have the potential to stain our teeth. Everything from the berries you eat with your oatmeal in the morning to the soy sauce you dunk your sushi in a night can discolor your teeth. Our Huntsville cosmetic and family dentist, Dr. Angela Wright Brown, suggests that one of they key ways to prevent or reduce the yellowing affect of certain foods and drinks is to take proper care of your teeth. We put together a few of the most common teeth staining culprits below and how you can prevent intense discoloring of your teeth.
However, as stains build-up over time, simply brushing and flossing properly may not be enough to get rid of long-term yellowing. As a cosmetic dentistry in Huntsville, AL, at Healthy Smiles P.C. we offer professional teeth whitening services in Huntsville, AL to rid your teeth of old stains and brighten your smile.
